Handmade with Care

Born from a single piece of leather and a stubborn belief that things should last.

In 2019, Marcus Torres left a corporate design job in San Francisco with a simple idea: make things the way they used to be made. By hand. With materials that get better with time.

He rented a small workshop in Portland's Pearl District, bought his first set of hand tools, and started cutting leather on a marble slab he found at a salvage yard. The first journal took six hours. The customer wore it every day for three years and came back for another.

That's how Atelier & Co started. Not with a business plan, but with one customer who understood what good leather feels like.

The Craft

Every piece begins with a single hide and ends with your hands. Here's how we make it happen.

Full-Grain Selection

We source only the finest full-grain leather from tanneries in Italy and the American West. Each hide is inspected by hand for natural markings and grain quality.

Hand Cutting

Each pattern is cut by hand using precision knives on marble slabs. No die cuts, no machines — every edge follows the artisan's steady hand.

Waxed Thread Stitching

Saddle-stitched by hand using waxed linen thread. Two needles, one thread — a technique that's been used for centuries because it simply doesn't unravel.

Edge Finishing

Edges are beveled, dyed, and burnished with a wooden slicker until they're smooth as glass. A process that takes patience but creates a seamless finish.

Brass Hardware

Solid brass closures, rivets, and pen loops — not plated, not coated. Real brass that develops a warm patina alongside your leather over years of use.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every piece comes with a lifetime guarantee. If it breaks, we fix it. If it wears, we restore it. That's how confident we are in what we make.

What people say about their Atelier & Co pieces.

★★★★★
"I bought my first Heritage Journal three years ago. The leather has developed this incredible patina — it looks better now than when it was new. I've never owned something that ages this gracefully."
Elena VossCreative Director, Portland

Frequently Asked

Everything you need to know about our leather goods.

What kind of leather do you use?
We use exclusively full-grain leather — the highest grade available. Unlike top-grain or bonded leather, full-grain retains the entire grain surface, making it stronger and more durable. Each hide develops a unique patina over time.
How long does each piece take to make?
A journal takes approximately 4-6 hours of hands-on work. A wallet takes 2-3 hours. A messenger bag can take 8-12 hours. Every piece is cut, stitched, and finished by a single craftsman.
What's your return policy?
We offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you're not happy with your purchase, return it in its original condition for a full refund. Custom orders can be returned within 14 days.
Can I get my initials monogrammed?
Yes. We offer blind embossing (no color), gold foil, and copper foil monogramming. Heritage and Workshop tier products include free monogramming. Standard fonts and custom fonts are available.
Where do you source your leather?
Our primary suppliers are Badalassi Carlo in Tuscany, Italy, and Wickett & Craig in Pennsylvania, USA. Both tanneries use traditional vegetable tanning methods that produce leather with exceptional character and durability.
